My Journey to Self-Acceptance

24 MAY 2023 – CARY MACARTHUR

When Dr. Slade first introduced the four temperament types to me, I felt myself trying really hard to identify with 3 of them.

I mean, I might could be an R because I always have a thousand things to do, and I love the way it feels to finally get something done.

I could also be an E because I don’t like making mistakes.

I really wish I could be an O, but everyone knows I am not very fun… I just didn’t want to be a C!!!!!

But alas… 95% C with a slice of E is who I am at the C.O.R.E.

Who I Was

I’ll admit, I threw a mini-fit about my results (and I may have cried a few tears). Over time, however, not only did I learn to accept that I am sensitive and sentimental and pretty much constantly seeking comfort, but more importantly, I began to believe that THAT is not broken!

“God cares a lot more about who we are and who we are becoming than about who we once were.”

Who I am

So many of us wish we could be someone other than who we are. We spend so much time comparing the strengths we see in others to our own flaws and limitations, and we exhaust ourselves trying to fit into a mold that was never meant for us. Trying to be someone else will never feel good. On the other hand, understanding, accepting, and learning to value who you ARE feels like a breath of fresh air.

At least that is what it felt like to me–almost 10 years ago–and with each breath, I felt more alive. I wanted everyone to feel what I felt. In true C fashion, I began to nudge Dr. Slade to get his research out of his office so that everyone could have access to it. And I have been working behind the scenes ever since then to help that happen.

Where I Am Now

Just a little about me:

I have been married to my husband Dave for almost 32 years. We have 5 adult kids and 8 grandkids. We have lived in St. George, Utah, since 1999.   I currently work as a marriage and family therapist, a Healthy+Happy coach, AND I also am super privileged to work as Dr. Slade’s program coordinator. I LOVE what I do!
