5 JULY 2023 – RACHEL M. SLADE

Unlike the other Healthy+Happy team members, I didn’t discover C.O.R.E., or Healthy+Happy, or Dr. Slade’s curriculum. I was along for the ride as Dr. Slade researched and developed C.O.R.E. and as he consolidated his education and experiences into the Healthy+Happy curriculum, because I’m his daughter!

The Beginning of it All

In addition to being his daughter, we share a lot of the same interests: running, the outdoors, and human development/family science.

I studied human development in college, and I have always loved talking about the way people’s brains work and family systems with my dad. Because of that (and because of nepotism), I was one of the first editors of the C.O.R.E. book, I helped develop the first version of the C.O.R.E. assessment, and I made the first Healthy and Happy slides.

Victory or defeat is not determined at the moment of crisis, but rather in the long and unspectacular period of preparation.

A Family Matter

My family and I have been talking about C.O.R.E. for years. We love to try to guess which
temperament type people are, and it’s not an uncommon occurrence for us to be sitting around the kitchen table, explaining C.O.R.E. to unsuspecting friends and guests.

Unsuspecting, but not unwilling. People have a natural interest in personality—in understanding themselves and others. I count myself lucky to have grown up with access to resources like Healthy and Happy and C.O.R.E.—with the knowledge to be able to communicate well, engage healthily with those around me, and effectively manage my life. As an E-O, I love to use C.O.R.E. to exactly determine how best to treat my friends and loved ones.

For instance, my C husband and I love to have long, long talks, while my O sister and I prefer to go out to lunch or for a drink.

The Ongoing Impact

As a coach, I love seeing how C.O.R.E. and Healthy and Happy click for other people! We are
not born intuitively knowing how to have healthy lives and relationships—but we can (and
should) learn, just like we learn every other skill.
